Server Protocol: IPX/SPX versus TCP/IP

Most games servers (I'm pretty sure that WON is included in this) don't use TCP/IP protocols for their default connection. They use IPX/SPX because it's faster and more reliable.

Although IPX/SPX is a Novell (pre-NetWare 5) protocol, it will work with Windows (they call it NWLink).

One thing to check is that your modem/network card supports the IPX/SPC protocol, and if you have any of the Windows NT or 2000 opperating systems installed on your pc, manually change the protocol binding order.

This isn't a cure all remedy, but it can help a great deal. The server and your own pc will be talking the same language and not having to convert one protocol to another, thus reducing the bandwidth you are using to communicate and hopefully speeding your connection.
