HOME PAGE: the Handy Vandal's Almanac

January 2008 - I am not longer maintaining the Almanac. In fact, I haven't been maintaining it for several years. I'm making a few changes at this time, in order to tie up loose ends ...

  • Removed the database-driven code (too buggy)
  • Restored links to original pages
  • I am leaving most of the original pages active
    • See Topics and Menu pages for more links
    • See Reviews page for unsolicited words of praise for the Almanac
  • See also:

Thanks to everyone who sent links, contributed tutorials, and sent me encouraging emails -- your energy helped make the Almanac possible.

The Ship - new mod for Half-Life 1 ...
In a way, The Ship is more like Thief than Half-Life ... the object is to kill withing being caught at it ...

"You might find a few things to concern you while you're enjoying the luxurious surroundings, like the fact that you have the name of another passenger, your quarry, visible on your screen… It might be a good idea to find that person and get rid of them in some way because somewhere there's another passenger with your name. They'll be looking for you and it's not going to be a friendly meeting…

Wishing you all a happy and prosperous New Year ...!

December 2003 - about .NOD and .NRP files - this just in from LaZermaniac -

"If a map has an info_node in it or an info_node_air, the first time you run it, it shows you a message, "Node Graph out of date, rebuilding". That creates an NOD ans an NRP file in your graphs directory with the same name as your map. You gotta include these with any good maps that contain AI nodes."

December 2003 - Spirit 1.2 is now available - the next iteration of Xen Rebels will be built on it.

November 2003 - the XEN REBELS project is planning one more release, based on Spirit. Also note that I'm thinking about shifting the emphasis from multiplayer to singleplayer -- taking some of my better maps, splicing them together with maps from various designers. I haven't made any singleplayer maps for a couple of years -- all of my attention has been focused on multiplayer -- but I always loved making SP maps, and with all the problem Valve has been having with industrial sabotage, I started thinking about ways to demonstrate that the original Half-Life engine still rocks.

October 2003 - Half-Life 2 Delayed

Valve's computers infected with keystroke logger virus,
Valve email systems compromised.
Script kiddy havoc? or industrial espionage?
Full story not yet known.
Half-Life 2 delayed ... until ... April 2004 ...?
